In 2004, social activist and educator Dr. Harry Grammer and his wife, Yana Simone Grammer, co-founded New Earth to mentor and empower at-risk youth in probation camps, group homes, juvenile halls, continuation schools, and public schools throughout Los Angeles County. At their Leadership Center in Culver City, young people benefit from a myriad of services, programs, interventions, and support that foster a commitment to work, education, family, and a community that puts youth on a trajectory of lifelong success.
New Earth has four signature programs that nurture and support students to re-enter their communities as future leaders:
1. Fluent Love of Words is New Earth's flagship poetry and music program that uses a project-based curriculum to teach students poetry to inspire the discovery and craft of their inner voice through art and music.
2. Down to Earth is a therapeutic gardening program taught in probation camp schools throughout Los Angeles County and at New Earth's Leadership Center. The program helps students experience the peace and resilience that comes from working with the Earth.
3. New Earth's Youth Diversion program connects professionals from Los Angeles County, the Culver City Police Department, and Culver City Unified School District with at-risk youth to create positive relationships with these professionals and instill leadership skills. A structured 12-week class focuses on proven interventions, life skills, and goal-setting with case management and support provided to graduates post-program completion.
4. Beyond Boundaries offers New Earth alumni an opportunity to travel outside of their neighborhoods, join camping trips and wilderness expeditions to explore the stillness of nature, and experience a quiet retreat from everyday life to consider life choices.
