Dia was founded in 1974 with the intention of helping ambitious, cutting-edge artists to realize their big ideas. Dia specializes in bringing to fruition projects that otherwise might not have received the necessary institutional support because of their scope or size. To fulfill its commitment to artists and artistry, the organization collects works from the 1960s and 1970s, commissions single artist projects, and facilitates exhibitions and installations.
In addition to managing nine sites in the United States and internationally, the collective operates three changing exhibition spaces in the state of New York: Dia Beacon, which is located on the banks of the Hudson River, Dia Chelsea, in lower Manhattan; and Dia Bridgehampton, on Long Island.
