A Field Guide to the Entire Planet

American Museum of Natural History

Founded in 1869, the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) is committed to both inspiring and educating the general public through exhibits, as well as educational programs that include professional development workshops and institutes for educators, after-school courses for students, and cultural programs for families. AMNH continues its deep commitment to science education, developing a vibrant community of learners and enhancing the science literacy of the public, providing what it calls a "panorama of the world's cultures." The institution houses: the Center for Science Teaching and Learning, which provides programs focused on supporting science teaching and learning among K-12 students and professional development for 4,000 teachers annually; the Center for Lifelong Learning, which offers a variety of out-of-school programs for children and public programs for families and adults; and the National Center for Science Literacy, Education, and Technology, creating content and strategies that take AMNH's scientific knowledge, collections, and science education to schools, homes, and communities nationwide.
