After Columbia University refused to admit female students, Barnard College was founded in 1889 as the only New York City college available to women. While Columbia eventually would become a coeducational university, Barnard continues to thrive as a prestigious women's academic institution. The college is dedicated to rigorously educating women and empowering them to become global leaders. Barnard offers students a wide range of majors, minors, interdisciplinary fields of study, research opportunities, and international travel programs. Through the college's partnership with Columbia, students from both institutions have access to the intimate education of a small liberal arts school and the resources of a larger research-driven university.
