The goal of CITYarts is to transform young people into active, impactful participants in their own communities. Founded in 1989, the organization achieves this mission by connecting youth with professional artists to create murals, mosaics, and other forms of public art. Through this creative process, CITYarts inspires young people by engaging them in their surrounding community and connecting them with other young artists.
The organization's four New York-based youth programs include: Community Identity, which encourages youth to envision better futures for their neighborhoods and revitalize them; Global HeART Warming, which produces murals that incorporate climate change concerns; Kids for Justice, which allows youth to consider the role of art in pursuing justice and social responsibility; and Windows of Opportunity, which connects exceptionally talented youth to prestigious arts institutions and programs. Additionally, CITYarts runs the global project Young Minds Build Bridges, which connects New York youth with young people around the world through arts-education workshops, exhibits, and murals.
