In 1988, the Santa Monica Mountains (SAMO) Fund was formed by citizens in an effort to represent public opinion regarding preservation and recreation in the Santa Monica Mountains. Since then, it has worked closely with the National Park Service to support and execute programming involving the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area while helping to foster an understanding of and passion for the sublime natural beauty of the mountains. The fund's programs range from conservation efforts to educational opportunities to bridging the gap between children and nature. The organization also sponsors scientific research and student internships related to the fund's projects and programs.
