Conserving Venice's Cultural Patrimony

Save Venice

In November of 1966, formidable floods in the city of Venice led to widespread damage. In response, the United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) established over thirty committees to preserve Venice's rich cultural heritage, including the Venice Committee of the International Fund for Monuments. In 1971, this Committee became Save Venice, Inc., an independent non-profit organization. In the decades since, Save Venice has underwritten the restoration of over 500 significant works, sites, and spaces. Beyond this direct conservation work, Save Venice advances Venetian scholarship and research by underwriting the cost of fellowships, publications, exhibitions, and other programming. In 2015, Save Venice opened the Rosand Library and Study Center, a Venice-based space for the public to generate, access, and disseminate knowledge around issues of conservation and restoration.
