The mission of the Department of Biology is to provide undergraduates at the University of Hawaii at Manoa a solid foundation of the life sciences either in preparation for careers and post-baccalaureate studies or, for non-majors, an appreciation and understanding of the role the life sciences play in our everyday lives.

The Department of Biology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa was first established in 1966 but has recently transitioned to becoming an official department within the College of Natural Sciences. As part of the College, it works in tandem with the University's departments and programs that concern themselves with the basic biological sciences. The Department's interdisciplinary curriculum is taught by professionals who are leading researchers in the fields of Biology, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering, Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences, and Women's Studies. The Department offers undergraduate degrees in Marine Biology and Biology, a minor in Biology, as well as Masters and PhD degrees in Zoology. It also offers a certificate in the Marine Option Program, open to students from any field of study. These programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels offer students rigorous and outstanding educations within the unique environment of Hawaii.
