The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology — better known as the Penn Museum — has roughly 1 million objects from Africa, Asia, the Americas, and the Mediterranean in its collection. Its mission is to advance our understanding of the world's cultural heritage.

Reaching Out to Diverse Communities

University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology

Penn Museum has a robust education department that reaches diverse communities across the state. Its four-stage School Outreach Program provides interactive, comprehensive exposure to the cultures of ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Rome. Not only are these cultures well-represented in the museum's collection, they also align directly with Common Core curricula, so visits will enhance what students are learning in the classroom. In addition to guided tours, interactive experiments in the museum offer a hands-on introduction to ancient cultures. For instance, a "mummification ceremony" workshop teaches essential elements of Egyptian beliefs, as well as the STEM concepts involved. Participating students and teachers also receive a one-year Household Membership at the Penn Museum, so they can continue to visit and learn.
