In 1970, the Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC) began producing off-off-Broadway shows, and it has since evolved into one of Broadway's most highly regarded theaters, responsible for more than 600 world, American, New York, and Broadway premieres. The MTC is committed to the creation of new plays and musicals through an intensive Artistic Development Program and performs in its Broadway home at the 650-seat Samuel J. Friedman Theatre (which is the restored Biltmore Theatre) and at New York City Center off-Broadway, which contains two stages, one with 300 seats and the other with 150). MTC productions have garnered many accolades, including 28 Tony Awards, 7 Pulitzer Prizes, 49 Obie Awards, and 50 Drama Desk Awards. The company also offers workshops for students that enliven the theatre-going experience.
