The Metropolitan Museum of Art — or, as it is known around the globe, the Met — was founded in 1870. Since then, it has become one of the world's finest art institutions. The largest art museum in the United States, the Met is home to 1.5 million works of art and houses the most comprehensive collection of American paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts. It is also known for its holdings of European paintings from the 13th through early-20th century, Asian art from the third millennium B.C. to the 21st century, and Egyptian art from 300,000 B.C. to the 4th century.

The Met's primary location in Manhattan, the Met Fifth Avenue, is the most-visited museum in the country, showcasing 5,000 years of art and culture from around the world. The Met Cloisters features the art, architecture, and gardens of Medieval Europe. At both locations, the Met offers notable exhibitions, lectures, and educational programs while producing cutting-edge research.

The Annenberg Foundation and the Met have enjoyed a long relationship, one that GRoW founder Gregory Annenberg Weingarten continues to this day. In 1991, Gregory's grandfather, the late Ambassador Walter H. Annenberg, announced that he would bequeath his collection of rare Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings to the Met, worth more than $1 billion at the time. The Annenberg Collection remains a centerpiece of the Met's world-class holdings.
