A Haven for Artistry

Metropolitan Opera

The Metropolitan Opera's first opera house was originally built as the private theater for a group of wealthy, New York businessmen. In the time since its founding, the Met has flourished and expanded to become one of the most prominent artistic organizations in the world. In the 1960s, the Met joined forces with other New York institutions to form the Lincoln Center of the Performing Arts. In 2006, Peter Gelb was named general manager and Yannick Nézet-Séguin joined as the conductor in 2018. With such a vibrant group of musicians, visual artists, performers, dancers, composers, and designers, plus a dedicated board of directors and staff, the Met is one of the most distinguished opera houses in the world.
