The museum opened as an educational institution on November 7, nine days after the Wall Street Crash of 1929. It was America's first museum devoted exclusively to modern art, and the first of its kind in Manhattan to exhibit European modernism. Still thriving almost a century later, MoMA is one of the most prominent museums of modern art in the world.
MoMA's collection of modern and contemporary art includes works of architecture and design, drawings, film, books, photography, paintings, sculpture, and electronic media. The museum celebrates diversity, creativity, and tolerance through its educational programs, research, conversations, and exhibits.
