Making Art More Visible

Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) was opened nine days after the Wall Street Crash of 1929, becoming America's first museum devoted exclusively to modern art, and the first of its kind in Manhattan to exhibit European modernism. Nearly a century later, MoMA stands as one of the most visited and influential modern art museums in the world. MoMA's collection of modern and contemporary art contains nearly 200,000 objects, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, media and performance art works, architectural models and drawings, design objects, and films. Iconic artworks on display at MoMA include Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night, Salvadore Dali's The Persistence of Memory, and Frida Kahlo's Self-Portrait with a Haircut. The library and archives are home to the world's leading concentration of research material on modern art.
