A Place for Modern Opera and Ballet to Call Home

The Paris Opera (Opéra National de Paris) has long been an innovator in creating widely acclaimed artistic productions. Since the 1660s, this influential institution has been a driving force in the development of classical opera as we think of it today and continues to present major productions to audiences from across the world. More than 400 performances take place each year in the Opera Bastille, the company's modern 2,700-seat theatre that was constructed in 1989, and in the 2,000-seat 19th-century architectural gem that is the Palais Garnier (whose renovated ceiling is adorned with frescoes painted by Marc Chagall). The Paris Opera Ballet, an essential partner of the Paris Opera, stands as the world's oldest national ballet.
