In 1992, a group of avid jazz buffs established the Gold Coast Jazz Society to bring more of the art form to South Florida. Soon after, the Society began a highly popular seven-concert jazz series. In 1994 jazz musicians from across South Florida who shared the Society's mission to perform and preserve America's jazz tradition formed the Gold Coast Jazz Society Band. The Society further expanded its work with the addition of extensive education and outreach programming. Today, this includes in-school programming such as JazzSLAM (Jazz Supports Language Arts and Math), online educational resources including Jazz is Elementary, Facets of Jazz, and Ella! First Lady of Song, as well as after-school activities such as Jazz for Wee Ones, Masterclasses, and Workshops. Beyond this, Gold Coast Jazz Society hosts First Friday Jazz Jams, a free monthly opportunity for young jazz musicians to learn and play along with professional jazz artists. Through this diverse array of offerings, the Society works to instill an understanding and appreciation of jazz for all ages.
