The Science Museum's original collection was first displayed at the South Kensington Museum (SKM), which opened in London, in 1857, at the site of today's Victoria and Albert Museum. After a series of changes, SKM's art, science, and engineering collections were separated. In 1909, SKM became the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the science and engineering collections formed the basis for the Science Museum. Today, the halls of London's Science Museum are filled with award-winning exhibitions, iconic objects, and the stories of astounding scientific achievement throughout history. Visitors of all ages from across the globe are encouraged to participate in interactive programming, which sheds light on topics ranging from Europe's earliest clockmaking to the historically interdependent relationship between science and art. Central to the Museum's mission is a tenacious commitment to learning; the Science Museum offers educational visits for students, online curriculum-based classroom resources, and an extensive research library.
