In 1967, Israel's Ministry of Religion began the arduous task of excavating from beneath a residential neighborhood the Western Wall, a remnant of the Holy Temple of Jerusalem. The Ministry created the Western Wall Heritage Foundation to continue and oversee this complex project, which took over 20 years and considered the needs of religions, tourism, archaeology and science, religious law, and security.
Today, the Western Wall and the Western Wall Tunnels attract more than 4 million visitors each year, making it one of the country's most popular and culturally significant tourist attractions. Beyond this, the Western Wall and the Tunnels hold educational value; the Foundation organizes religious ceremonies at the site and offers guided informative tours for students, families, and other visitors. Further, the Foundation is developing The Western Wall Heritage Center, which will serve as an educational and informational hub on the site's rich cultural history.
