Beginning as a small grassroots organization in 1982, CSCLA now has a formidable presence with 50-plus locations and 125 hospital partnerships and satellites around the world. Founder Dr. Harold H. Benjamin's Patient Empowerment Model advocates for patients and families to partner with their physicians, take control of their health care, and be an active participant in the health care process. CSCLA's free programs include support groups and counseling, healthy lifestyle classes, social activities, educational workshops, and child, teen, and family programs. Thanks in part to the Cancer Support Community's global efforts, these services are considered to be an integral part of today's quality cancer care.
CSCLA also amplifies the patient's voice in research and policy, and advocates for cancer-care equity, supporting the Spanish-speaking communities in Downtown and West Los Angeles, the under-resourced communities of Arlington Heights and its environs, and other individuals in greater Los Angeles area who are impacted by the high costs of cancer.
