Serving nearly 200,000 students and containing 274 early childhood, elementary, middle, and high schools, the Houston Independent School District (HISD) is the eighth-largest school district in the United States. Established in 1923, HISD is a two-time recipient of the Broad Prize award, in recognition of the significant gains that the school district has made in the achievements of its students. HISD endeavors to "equitably educate the whole child" so that its students "graduate as critical thinkers and problem solvers."

The school district – and the entire city itself — faced enormous challenges in 2017 following the horrific devastation wrought by Hurricane Harvey. GRoW was honored to support the recovery efforts, which included restoring the schools' libraries.
