The Houston Educational Excellence Foundation was created in 1994 to improve the Houston Independent School District's resources. The organization became inactive in 1998 and was reborn in 2002, changing its name to the Houston Independent School District Foundation (HISD Foundation) the following year. HISD Foundation has since raised (and manages) almost $95 million in private philanthropic funds for the district's programs and schools.
Containing 274 early childhood, elementary, middle, and high schools, the Houston Independent School District (HISD) is the eighth-largest school district in the United States (serving nearly 190,000 students) and one of the largest employers in Houston. HISD is a two-time recipient of the Broad Prize award, in recognition of the significant gains that the school district has made in the achievements of its students. HISD endeavors to "equitably educate the whole child" so that its students "graduate as critical thinkers and problem solvers."
The school district – and the entire city itself — faced enormous challenges in 2017 following the horrific devastation wrought by Hurricane Harvey. GRoW was honored to support the recovery efforts, which included restoring the schools' libraries.
