Elevating Native Cultures, Past and Present

School for Advanced Research

The School for Advanced Research (SAR) was founded in 1907 as a center for archaeological research in the Americas. In the many decades since, SAR has undergone several changes, including in the 1970's relocating to its present 15-acre campus on Santa Fe's historic east side. Its focus also shifted to include a resident scholar program about anthropology and related social sciences, recognized for its achievements worldwide, as is its collection of Southwest Native American art. Approximately four decades later, SAR evolved again to take its current form. Today, SAR is committed to innovative social science research and collaborative stewardship of the Native American art collection with Indigenous communities. Beyond protecting this renowned collection, SAR offers three artist-in-residence fellowships and eight writer-in-residence fellowships for Native American artists and authors each year. SAR also conducts extensive educational programming, offering a wide array of classes, lectures, and exhibitions designed to foster understanding of the human experience.
