Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz

The Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz was founded in 1986. The organization was initially named for American Jazz musician Thelonious Monk, but in January 2019 it was renamed in honor of Grammy and Academy Award winner Herbie Hancock, who serves as Chairman of the Institute's Board. The Institute is dedicated to preserving and teaching jazz and its history to students of all ages. Since 1989, the Institute has taught in public schools across the United States. This program is designed to enhance the confidence and creativity of students, and 100 percent of involved students have gone on to graduate high school.

At the college level, the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance is a two-year program hosted at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. Started in 1995, it offers carefully selected students the opportunity to study alongside some of the world's leading jazz musicians and educators. The Institute runs a variety of other diverse, innovative programs such as Math, Science & Music, which employs music as a teaching tool in math and science classes across the United States.
