San Domenico School was founded in 1850 as California's first independent Catholic school. The school rapidly became an educational and cultural center for young Catholic women in the state. In recent years, San Domenico School has undergone a number of drastic changes. In 2015, the school welcomed its first co-educational freshman class, and in 2017 the school made the decision to no longer be a Catholic school (though it continues to honor its Catholic and Dominican heritage). Today, the school is home to 700 kindergarten through 12th-grade students of all faiths. Students participate in an interdisciplinary academic curriculum, stellar athletics, and robust arts programming. Furthermore, students are encouraged to build service-learning projects that emphasize social justice, equity, and environmental preservation. San Domenico School strives to produce students who are thoughtful, critical, and inspired to create a better world.
