Since its establishment in 1981 under the original call letters of KLON, KKJZ — also known as KJazz 88.1 FM — has been committed to the promotion and preservation of the rich cultural heritage of jazz. The No. 1 full-time mainstream jazz station in the United States, KJazz offers diverse programming, including straight-ahead jazz, bebop, swing, blues, and Latin jazz. The station also provides four jazz scholarships and paid student internships each year while producing free jazz and blues concerts in the community. The California State University, Long Beach Research Foundation — which owns KKJZ's non-commercial broadcast license — contracts with Global Jazz, Inc. to program and provide supporting services for the station.
