On October 27, 2018, after the tragic shooting at Tree of Life synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, the city's Muslim community came together to support the Jewish community in spirit and solidarity, and by raising over $200,000 for the families of the victims and members of the congregation. As the Muslim community in Christchurch, New Zealand suffered its own devastating shooting on March 15 of this year, the Jewish community in Pittsburgh mobilized in turn, determined to respond in-kind, by standing in solidarity with the Muslim community in Christchurch. Since then, over 3,000 donations have been made to the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh for a fund to support the victims in New Zealand.
Through his GRoW @ Annenberg initiative, Gregory Annenberg Weingarten matched his contribution to the synagogue in Pittsburgh with a donation supporting Christchurch's Muslim community. This interfaith support between two communities separated by thousands of miles of land and ocean is a testament to the bonds that bring us together despite differences of faith or nationality.
