In 1998, Catherine Curry-Williams and Scott Williams founded Inclusion Matters by Shane's Inspiration in honor of their son, Shane Alexander Williams. Shane was born in 1997 and passed away after two short weeks as a result of spinal muscular atrophy. In 2000, the organization opened California's first-ever Universally Accessible Playground in Griffith Park. This playground was the first of many. Since 2000, Inclusion Matters has constructed 65 similarly accessible playgrounds across the globe, and 75 more are in development. In addition to building playgrounds, the organization operates global educational programs aimed at eliminating bias against children with other abilities, while fostering increased empathy. inclusion Matters' social inclusion program – Together, We Are Able – has served more than 40,000 students in over 60 countries across all continents.
