In 1998, Catherine Curry-Williams and Scott Williams founded Inclusion Matters by Shane's Inspiration in honor of their son, Shane Alexander Williams. Shane was born in 1997 and passed away after only two weeks as a result of spinal muscular atrophy. In 2000, the organization opened California's first-ever universally accessible playground in Griffith Park. Since 2000, Inclusion Matters has constructed 74 similarly accessible playgrounds across the globe, and 50 more are in development. In addition, the organization operates global educational programs aimed at eliminating bias against children with different abilities and fostering increased empathy. Inclusion Matters' social inclusion program — Together, We Are Able — has served more than 45,000 students in 65 countries.
