Culture & Civic Life
Community Coalition was founded in the 1990s to harness African American and Latino activism in South Los Angeles in order to bring about change.
WISDOM strives to establish a united voice on social justice values and seeks solutions to systemic challenges. WISDOM's grassroots approach harnesses the participation of more than 160 congregations from 19 religious traditions, as well as EXPO (Ex-incarcerated People Organizing) and the Menikanaehkem community of the Menominee Nation. One of WISDOM'S primary areas of focus is dismantling mass incarceration and its disproportionate effect on poor people and communities of color in the state of Wisconsin. The formerly incarcerated members of EXPO lead ROC (Restoring Our Communities), a signature campaign within this nonprofit. In addition, WISDOM's network conducts extensive work defending immigrant rights, promoting public transportation, championing economic justice, and expanding health care accessibility. Although WISDOM and its local partners address a wide range of issues and use a largely decentralized model, they are united by a core belief: that the people closest to the challenges are those closest to the solutions, and the key to success is to elevate the voices of these leaders.
