Hurricane Island Outward Bound School established its first school program on the coast of Maine in 1964. The school used Hurricane Island, located 75 miles off the coast, as the summer camp's base for rock climbing, sailing, and sea kayaking. This island-based school rapidly expanded: more than 50 years later, Outward Bound offers its curriculum and model to more than 150 elementary and middle schools across the country annually, including 70,000 students and teachers. It serves students from elementary school to college, as well as adults.
Outward Bound's model uses unfamiliar settings that enable students to experience adventure and overcome challenges so they can see that their potential exceeds their expectations. Through wilderness expeditions, learners of all ages develop character and intellectual skills that translate into the classroom and throughout life.
