Located approximately nine miles south of mainland Rhode Island, Block Island is notable for its pristine hiking trails, picturesque beaches, and undeveloped natural areas that provide essential habitats for a variety of wildlife species. Founded in 1942 and supported by its members, the Block Island Historical Society is located in a former home-turned-summer hotel in Bridgegate Square, which serves as the headquarters for the Historical Society and the Block Island Historical Museum. The museum houses artifacts from the island's history, including Manissean stone tools, Victorian collectibles, textiles, boat models, maps, and vintage photographs, and it offers special exhibitions, tours, and events.
