Block Island Historical Society

Block Island – located approximately 9 miles south of mainland Rhode Island – is a 9.7-mile island located in Block Island Sound, a strait in the Atlantic Ocean. While the island is a popular summer tourist destination known for outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, swimming, and fishing along its picturesque beaches, the island also provides essential habitat for wildlife and a place for people to appreciate the island's natural environment. It is world-renowned for its undeveloped natural areas, which host a variety of migratory songbirds during the fall.   

Founded in 1942, the Block Island Historical Society is located in a historic building located at the intersection of Old Town Road and Ocean Avenue in what is known as Bridgegate Square. Today the building serves as the headquarters for the Historical Society and the Block Island Historical Museum, Gallery, and Shop. The museum houses an extensive collection of significant artifacts related to Block Island's rich history dating back to an indigenous Manissean Village Site, circa 500 BC. The museum also offers a variety of special exhibits, tours, and space for special events. The Block Island Historical Society is supported by the individual membership of those who embrace and see the value in preserving Block Island's varied and rich history.
