Southern California is no stranger to wildfires, given its mix of hot weather, dry Santa Ana winds, and drought-like conditions. But December proved to be an especially destructive month: The Thomas Fire burned more than 270,000 acres in Ventura County over the course of two weeks, and the Creek Fire in Sylmar, the Rye Fire in Santa Clarita, and the Skirball Fire in Bel-Air spread throughout Los Angeles County around the same time.
