Equal Justice Initiative Opens Memorial and Museum in Alabama

Located in Montgomery, Alabama — the birthplace of the civil rights movement — the National Memorial for Peace and Justice is the first of its kind: an institution dedicated to victims of lynching and public torture throughout American history. The nearby Legacy Museum offers an in-depth exploration of the history of racial violence, segregation, slavery, and modern mass incarceration. The museum is constructed on the former site of one of America's largest slave markets, where structures for warehousing and transporting slaves once stood.
