The Skyhook Foundation endeavors to prepare children for bright futures in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) by means of a creative outdoor learning environment. Founded in 2009 by social activist/writer/philanthropist/NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the organization is named after Jabbar's signature shot that helped to make him one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
Skyhook's flagship program is Camp Skyhook, which is a partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District that introduces children from culturally, racially, and socio-economically diverse neighborhoods to both nature and teamwork. Built around a curriculum developed by UCLA and NASA, the immersive five-day experience educates elementary school students in an unconventional, oversized classroom: the Angeles National Forest in Southern California. By exploring technology and the great outdoors, students are given the chance to develop a passion for STEAM learning and set themselves up for success in school and beyond.
