CARE works on an international scale to provide both short-term emergency relief and long-term development support to communities in need. In 2023, CARE is supporting 1,600 projects that reach nearly 175 million people in 111 countries. These programs address a large range of social issues that contribute to generational poverty, including education, climate change, sexual and reproductive health, community violence, and economic empowerment for women.
Central to CARE's mission is the empowerment of women and girls – who make up the majority of impoverished people around the world – as the key to uplifting families and entire communities. Further, CARE strives to create sustainable and long-term change led by the people living in these vulnerable communities, rather than providing externally driven, quick solutions. CARE supplements its extensive community programming with global advocacy work on issues including health policy, gender discrimination, and economic empowerment resources.
