The principal role of the International Fund for Public Interest Media is to enable media markets to work for democracy. It will support the media through the current existential threat and develop lasting solutions to the media-market failure in low- and middle-income countries.

Enabling Media to Work for Democracy

International Fund for Public Interest Media

The International Fund for Public Interest Media (IFPIM) is a new, independent, multilateral initiative that responds to the existential threats facing public interest media. IFPIM is designed to urgently ramp up financial support to independent media organizations in crisis and accelerate long-term, systemic solutions to enable media markets to work for democracy.

Around the world, independent media — acknowledged for generations as a fundamental pillar for the functioning of democratic societies — is under unprecedented and, in some settings, existential threat. Traditional business models, which have been eroding for a decade or more, are beginning to collapse, particularly as sources of advertising revenue shrink and move online. These problems are most acute in low- and middle-income countries and were only exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The International Fund provides an ambitious, coordinated, and well-resourced international response to the crisis. Its unique structure is designed to enable a broad multilateral coalition to mobilize new resources in support of public interest media globally while maintaining the independence of both the Fund and its public interest grantees.

IFPIM is a fiscally sponsored project of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors (RPA). RPA's mission is to "accelerate philanthropy in pursuit of a just world by providing deep global expertise to make philanthropy more thoughtful, equitable, and effective."
