Safeguarding the Spinner Dolphin

Centro Golfinho Rotador

The spinner dolphin is the third-largest species of dolphin in the world. It lives in the subtropical and tropical waters of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans and is named for its ability to shoot out of the water and complete up to seven rotations in the air. In 1990, the Spinner Dolphin Project was formed to preserve Brazil's Fernando de Noronha's dolphins, home to the largest viewable concentration of spinner dolphins in the world. Its goal is to develop environmental awareness, promote research of the natural history and behavior of the Noronha dolphins, and to study the interaction of the dolphins in this high-traffic tourism area.
